Message From The Head of School

A Week of FRIENDraising; A Lifetime of Fine-tuning

This week was an enjoyable whirlwind. Beginning with our Booster Club/PTO First Annual Texas Hold'em Tournament and Casino Night, which kicked off post-Shabbat on October 17th, the excitement commenced. The evening of "serious fun" was a spirited night of FRIENDraising. Our DKJA family, staff, faculty, Board members, and the community joined together for casino games and refreshments. Booster President Eric Lipson, PTO President Deena Krevans, Associate Head of School Sharon Kamber, and a fabulous team of volunteers made the evening a success. We hope you'll join us at future FRIENDraising events, which will be publicized.

As I transition to another topic, I'd like to make mention of a very important lesson in "fine-tuning" that we all should incorporate into our daily lives. Whether it's working as a team to plan an event, such as Casino Night, or challenging ourselves to become highly effective people, both as individuals, and as a community of learners, character and embracing personal change are imperative.

Earlier this year, staff and and faculty had the privilege of hearing speaker Michael Bileca, MBA (shown with me, at right) as he presented an informative and "team building" program. Mr. Bileca has come full circle. He is a former student of Middle School Principal Carol Kolsky.

Mr. Bileca guided our groups through a series of interactive exercises focusing on the principles of author Stephen R. Covey, recognized internationally for his approaches to solving personal and professional problems by following a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service, and human dignity. Lessons in personal change are outlined in the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The habits are as follows:

1.   Be proactive
2.   Begin with the end in mind
3.   Put first things first
4.   Think win / win
5.   Seek first to understand / then to be understood
6.   Synergize
7.   Sharpen the Saw

I highly recommend taking a moment to peruse this book. It reinforces the values we strive to instill in our students at DKJA. We are educating our students in an atmosphere of Jewish Living, Learning, and Academic Achievement, and one in which we work as a "community family." As we end another week, let's take a moment to reflect upon how we can all be effective people, inside and out.

REMINDER...IMPORTANT UPDATE Regarding the 95th Ave. Entrance for All Users of the Federation Campus:
After several years of planning, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County will commence the expansion and modernization of the 95th Avenue entrance and guardhouse. Lower School Highlights

By Teacher Sherry Berlin, 3-205
Third grade has been studying about colonial America. Posing as Pilgrims, we wrote letters to our friends back in England describing our voyage on the Mayflower and our struggles in the New World. After reading about this time in our history, our class was inspired to create their own model of a colonial town (photo at left). Class 3-205 worked diligently on this display. Each student made their own colonial house using a recycled milk carton.
Based on our reading and discussions, our town includes a blacksmith shop, a wigmaker, a tavern, a meetinghouse, a cabinetmaker, etc. This hands-on experience brought to life what the children read about in their books.

First-graders Received the First Parasha Book of B’reshit

It was a very exciting moment!

Middle School Highlights
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
On Thursday, October 29, 2009 , we will show our support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by allowing Middle School students and staff to wear pink accessories. These may include bracelets, other jewelry, and hair accessories. Full school uniform must still be worn on this day. The National Junior Honor Society will be selling bracelets for $1 each beginning Monday, October 26, 2009 through Thursday, October 29, 2009.  All proceeds will be sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. These bracelets will be available during candy sales next week as well as in the main office.

“Red Ribbon Week” at DKJA
Our Middle School art students created exciting posters for National Drug Awareness Week (October 26 through October 30, 2009). Their work is proudly displayed in our main hallway! This curriculum-based project links our Guidance program, special guest speakers, and computer and art classes together for learning and combatting the perils of drug use.

Our fifth-graders' theme was “Join the Right Crowd,” and they made thumb print creatures doing the right thing. Sixth-graders chose a favorite cartoon character, enlarged the image, and created their own slogan to go with that character. Seventh-graders drew an antique key and used the 2009 slogan on their posters, “Drug-free is the Key.” Eighth-graders learned in computer class how to manipulate their faces into exaggerated designs, and wrote slogans about how drugs can manipulate your life.

High School Highlights
For their next project,  art students will be working on coiled clay vases in the style of British artist Grayson Perry.  Recently, two artists visited art classes and demonstrated the technique of coil pottery to students. Alexandra Schwartz (DKJA alumna and daughter of high school art teacher Mrs. Anita Schwartz) and Jasmine Baker showed a presentation of their work to students. Both are ceramic artists and recent University of Central Florida graduates.

Additionally, Rabbi Yehoshua Hartman (Boca Raton Synagogue  scholar-in-residence) visited the high school last week.  He made a presentation to two of  junior and senior classes, and students enjoyed his engaging manner on the topic of Shabbat. Rabbi Hartman is currently Head of the Beit Midrash program at Hasmonean High School in London.  He is a recognized expert on the teachings of the Maharal, who is known for his works on Jewish philosophy and Jewish mysticism.
